Who is Jesus Christ?
When we scan the Gospels (especially Mark) we can make note of the things Jesus does and the titles used for Jesus. Here is a summary of some of the actions of Jesus.
- Teaches/Preaches
- Heals
- Calls people to follow him
- Feeds the hungry
- Was Crucified
- Dies
- Was Buried
- Is Resurrected (raised to new life)
The following terms are also used of Jesus Christ:
Messiah (Hebrew)/Christ (Greek)- used over 50 times to refer to Jesus. Means “anointed” or “chosen one.” Jesus Christ was anointed or chosen to lead us to:
1. Learn of God’s love for us.
2. Learn God’s will for our lives.
3. Be brought into a right relationship with God.
Lord - used over 90 times (supreme in authority)
Savior/Healer (“sodzo” can be translated either way) Jesus’ name in Hebrew is Yeshua (Joshua) which means “Yahweh saves.” (Yahweh is God’s name and translated “I Am”)
Son of God (22 verses) Jesus is a revelation of God and who God is for us.
Teacher/Rabbi
Jesus emphasized in his teaching:
1. How to love God and others 66 verses
2. Kingdom of God/Heaven 64 verses
3. His goal is to lead us to have a deep and loving relationship with God.
Risen One: God raised him from death.
1. We can still follow him and his teachings, just as his Disciples did. (Christ still speaks through Scripture)
2. He is the first born of the dead, and in him we can have: New Life and Eternal Life
